my friends and i are working on a documentary about a place that's been really important (even foundational) to all of us, and how it's gone now.
i'll leave most of the story up to the documentary to tell, but the short of it is that we used to hang out in an abandoned sushi factory which over time became a third space for us. we had fairy lights and couches, drawing supplies, shelter from the rain. people could write their name on the walls to let others know they'd visited. it was a safe punk/queer haven that functioned as a retreat from the world, a space you could comfortably rest when everything else was too much.
i wish i could go back...
eventually it got demolished, completely flattened! and they haven't built anything on the land yet, so its corpse is just sitting there, a flat insulting landscape of concrete and dust and broken hearts. we could have kept using that space if it wasn't taken away from us, now we have nowhere to go...
but there's always hope!!!!!!!!!! so we're making a documentary about how special the sushiplex was, how we're all coping with it and what it meant to everyone. if we can do it once, we can do it again, and we're hopeful that we can eventually find or make another place like it!!
